An SSL certificate is an essential security measure for your website. It ensures that your site is secure and verifies that it’s genuinely yours, not a scammy impersonator. These days, most reputable websites have one, but it’s so important that it’s worth double-checking.

How to Check if Your Website Has an SSL Certificate

Checking your website’s SSL status is simple:

  1. Look at your website’s URL (the full address at the top of your browser).

  2. Check whether it starts with https (the "s" stands for secure).

  3. If it says https:// Great! Your site is secure. You can get on with your day.

  4. If it just says http:// You need to get an SSL certificate as soon as possible.

(Hint: If you can’t see the full URL in your browser bar, copy and paste your website address into a Word document to view it.)

Why SSL Certificates Matter

Having an SSL certificate is not just a technical detail, it’s crucial for your business’s credibility and success. Here’s why:

  1. Protects Your Visitors: SSL encrypts data between your site and its users, protecting sensitive information like contact details or payment data.

  2. Avoids Security Warnings: Many antivirus and security tools block users from visiting unsecured sites. Worse still, visitors might see a warning labelling your site as suspicious. Not exactly a confidence booster!

  3. Boosts SEO: Google ranks secure websites higher in search results. Without SSL, your site could lose valuable visibility.

  4. Builds Trust: A secure site reassures visitors that your business is legitimate and professional.

How to Get an SSL Certificate
